Life at Codez
My search for a winter internship ended when I was confirmed for a place in Codez IT solution by Ms. Kumud. Earlier I had sent an email containing my resume to career@codez.in. I got a reply from Kumud and we had a number of exchanges of emails and then I was sure that in Dec 2010 I am going to be in Kolkata at Codez IT solutions. I had no idea how it will be or how it will work out. I reached Kolkata and went searching for a PG near our office in salt lake. It was during my search I came to office and met Navin Soni. He right away let my search for a PG end and sends me to one which he knew. Everything worked out so well I was left imagining if it was real. Though Kolkata was not new to me but certainly settling in any place away from home brings anxiety. It was there I met Ashish Anand who was another intern at codez. There was one difference though and it was that Ashish was doing internship at Codez for the second time.
Work was no work but full of innovation and play. From day one I started going through Search Engine Optimization (SEO). I met with subhankar da the SEO expert. To be true I had no idea how SEO works, I just knew that it worked. Then we started our mission of Optimizing and for an example we took my own blog. I was already trying so hard to make my blog look beautiful and have all kinds of add-ons. But nothing worked better than SEO.
We first began by adding a number of relevant keywords and descriptions in my page’s Meta tags. To note, I didn’t had any Meta tags before in my page. Meta tags are really crucial to a page. It is so because search engines like Google particularly crawl through the html of a page. These Meta tags provide the information about the website and its relevance with the search text entered.
Then submitting the link in directory was the best idea. It is so because search engines crawl through all these directories in search of a new website/link not listed in their search engines. We went straight ahead in putting my blog link in various public and free directories like DMOZ. Subhankar-da provided me with a list of over 2000 links of public directories. In those directories there are a number of subdirectories and categories. We need to find a category relevant to our blog and submit our link only into it. It is important to submit in a relevant category because otherwise the submitted link will be deleted from the directory. For example the directory “business” is very popular and important as it includes business of all kinds. If I put my blog link in business category then it will help me get noticed more but soon I will be removed from the directory, hence such an attempt is not made.
I went ahead and submitted my blog link in as many directories as I can. All the SEO work gets reflected after some time as it takes time for a link to get successfully registered. Moreover the search engine lists new website/link (like Google caches each and every webpage on the net) or re-lists existing websites/links in some time intervals (days or weeks).
Then the day came when I was asked by Navin to give a presentation about Google’s search engine algorithm and SEO. Due to a lot of work at Codez, Navin and all our colleagues remained busy for a few days. And then when all were in some respite from work I got ready to deliver the presentation. It was first of its kind presentation where my focus was only to present the topic and what I know and scrapping off the formality and cordiality. All the people in the office became the audience and at intervals I was flooded with questions but on a total light note.
This is and will be the best thing about Codez; it’s that things here are light. Free from cordial behavior and formality you can best put your effort in your work. I am so much loving it and it is getting the best out of me. By the time I leave back for Bhubaneswar (my home town) I am sure I will definitely be able to complete my targeted project with some work and a lot of fun. That’s how we work around here.
